118 - Speed Up Dialing On Your Modem

This week's tip is for modem users only. Most people are used to the way their modems sound when they are connecting. Unless someone has clued you into this tip already, dialing sounds like a rather long string of individual beeps. Here's the tip. You can change it so that it dials so quickly, the beeps will be a blur. It will run noticeably faster and while that's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, I can almost guarantee you will like the improvement.

As always, Windows hides these settings pretty well and the windows you need to find are named differently between Windows versions. Start with the directions below for your version. The final step is shown below that in the "Finish Instructions". This is a very easy change to make and trust me, you'll love the results.

Start here for Windows XP -

  1. Double-click on "My Computer".
  2. Select "Control Panel".
  3. Double-click on "Phone and Modem Options".
  4. Select the "Modem" tab.
  5. Click on the "Properties..." button.
  6. Select the "Advanced" tab.
  7. Look for the "Extra Initialization Commands" box.
Start Here for Windows 98 (95 and ME should be the same) -
  1. Double-click on "My Computer".
  2. Select "Control Panel".
  3. Double-click on "Modems"
  4. (If your modem isn't highlighted, click on it once)
  5. Click on the "Properties" button.
  6. Select the "Connection" tab.
  7. Click on the "Advanced" button.
  8. Look for the "Extra Settings" box.

Finishing Instructions (for all versions) -

The box you have just located contains information sent to your modem when you go to dial a number. What you are going to do is ADD six characters onto the end of whatever characters, if any, are already there. If the box is empty when you first find it, just type the new characters in. It it's not empty, just add them to the end of what's there.

Don't worry about messing it up. If you make an error, just hit the "cancel" button and then go back to the window and start again. Don't leave any spaces. There should be no spaces in the string of characters when you're done. What you are adding is:

         s11=40

That's it. Exit normally (hitting the OK buttons) and you are done. Now, try your new change by signing onto the Internet. It should sound (and be) MUCH faster.
